CFL Roster Deadline Passed. Hamilton Got Stronger. Toronto Lost Its Defensive Anchor.

McManis from Toronto to Hamilton is a double move — it helps the Tiger-Cats and hurts the Argonauts simultaneously. Winnipeg stayed quiet. Saskatchewan added depth.

The CFL's roster deadline for finalizing free agency commitments passed Sunday, and the league's nine teams now have a clearer picture of what they're building toward when training camp opens in May.

Hamilton's addition of Wynton McManis gives the Tiger-Cats a legitimate defensive anchor for the first time since they parted with Simoni Lawrence three years ago. McManis arriving from Toronto also removes a player who had been consistently problematic for Hamilton in late-season games — the kind of rival-to-roster move that helps twice. Hamilton's defense was functional in 2025; with McManis, the ceiling rises.

Toronto's response to losing McManis has been deliberately understated. The Argonauts drafted a linebacker in the January draft and signed a pair of American linebackers from the NFL practice squad pool. Whether that group can maintain the defensive standard that McManis helped establish is the central question for a Toronto team that remains competitive on offense but now has a secondary leadership void.

In Winnipeg, the Blue Bombers' offseason has been about maintenance rather than addition. The defending conference champions signed their priority free agents early — before the window officially opened — and have made no additions that could be described as upgrades. This is either confident execution of a roster they trust or an offseason that will be judged harshly if the team's performance regresses. Zach Collaros turns 38 this season; how Winnipeg manages his workload and the development of backup options will matter more this year than last.

Saskatchewan entered the offseason with the most significant roster holes in the West Division and has used the free agency window to partially address them. The Roughriders added an offensive tackle and two receivers, which is the right priority ordering for a team that struggled to protect its quarterback consistently in 2025.
