Los Angeles Acquires Trent McDuffie From Kansas City, Giving McVay the Cornerback His Defense Has Needed Since the Super Bowl LVI Season
McDuffie is 24, physical, and experienced in a coverage-heavy scheme. The Rams' secondary is now the most improved unit in the NFC West.

The Los Angeles Rams acquired cornerback Trent McDuffie from Kansas City in a trade that immediately restructured one of the most scrutinized units on their roster and gave defensive coordinator Chris Shula one of the better young corners in the NFC.
McDuffie, 24, is entering his fifth NFL season having established himself as a legitimate first-tier cornerback through four years of consistent play in Kansas City's coverage-heavy scheme. He is physical enough to play press coverage on the outside, fluid enough to work in zone, and experienced enough to process offensive formations at the speed the modern NFL requires. He arrives in Los Angeles as a foundational piece rather than a project.
The Kansas City decision to move McDuffie reflects the cap management and roster reconstruction that organizations with multiple Super Bowl-era contracts must continually navigate. The Chiefs were not moving McDuffie from weakness — they were moving him from depth at a position where the compensation was more valuable than the roster slot. The Rams, operating from a different roster position, saw an opportunity to acquire a player they would not normally have access to and took it. Sean McVay extended cornerback Jaylen Watson and safety Kamren Curl in the same window, building a secondary that now has genuine depth at multiple positions.
The NFC West secondary competition entering 2026 is meaningful. San Francisco has rebuilt with pass rush additions. Seattle, the defending Super Bowl champions, retained its core defensive personnel. The Rams have now added McDuffie to a unit that was their primary area of vulnerability in 2025. Whether that addition is sufficient to change their playoff trajectory depends on factors beyond the secondary — but the cornerback group around McDuffie is, on paper, the best McVay has had since the Super Bowl LVI season.
