The Eagles' asking price — a first-round pick plus a second-round addition — and the cap mechanics that make a pre-June trade financially punishing for Philadelphia have prevented a deal from materializing. A trade after June 1, when the Eagles' dead cap obligation on Brown drops from approximately $43 million to roughly $20 million, is the most commonly cited timeline for a resolution.

Philadelphia's decision to sign Marquise Brown to a one-year deal this week is being read around the league as organizational preparation for A.J. Brown's eventual departure. Whether that departure happens in the direction of New England, or elsewhere among Brown's reported preferred destinations, will be the defining transaction of the remaining spring window.
