Travis Etienne signed with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, returning the running back to his home state of Louisiana after five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Etienne, who grew up in Jennings, Louisiana, described the signing as "more than a cherry on top" in comments reported by NFL.com. The former Clemson standout was selected by Jacksonville in the first round of the 2021 draft and went on to become one of the AFC South's most productive backs over four active seasons, including a career year in 2023 that established him as a legitimate top-ten back in the league.
The Saints, who enter 2026 with a rebuilt offensive line and a second-year quarterback in Derek Carr's successor, add a proven lead back who brings both receiving ability and red zone productivity. New Orleans has historically been among the league's most committed rushing organizations, and Etienne's skill set — contact balance, vision, route running out of the backfield — maps well onto the kind of offense the Saints have consistently tried to run.
Etienne's final year in Jacksonville was complicated by the organization's broader rebuild and by a scheme that did not consistently maximize what he does well. His production declined. The Saints' evaluation, clearly, is that the decline was organizational rather than physical.
The signing reunites Etienne with an organization that has always valued the position. For a player who has spent five years in a city that was not home, the chance to play professional football an hour and a half from where he grew up carries meaning that is difficult to quantify.
